Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines. In mechanical engineering, laws of physics are applied for analyzing, designing and manufacturing mechanical systems. It deals with mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and energy related concepts.Automobiles, aircrafts, machines, ships etc are designed using various mechanical engineering concepts. Mechanical engineering involves mastering advanced mathematics, basic chemical, civil and electrical engineering concepts. Computers are widely used in mechanical engineering for designing, maintenance, etc.
- Mechanics: In mechanical engineering, mechanics is used to calculate the amount on stress on material and modifications are done accordingly. This includes static, dynamics, mechanics of materials and fluid mechanics.
- Kinematics: This is the study of moving objects while ignoring the force moving the object.
- Robotics: This is another interesting branch of mechanical engineering which also includes electrical and computer technology. Dangerous tasks or repetitive tasks can be done using robots where a program instructing the robot what to do is fed before hand.
- Structural analysis: Here the material of an object is analyzed and questions regarding which object can withstand what amount of load are answered. Also conclusions are drawn on what load will deform the object and what amount of load will break it.
- Thermodynamics: This deals with the change of one form of energy into another. It deals with heat transfer, energy conversion, heating, cooling, ventilating, etc.
- This is an ever-growing branch where new developments and inventions are seen everyday. Nanotechnology is one of the fields in which research is being done.
